Start with contribution per sale
Selling price less unit cost, other unit costs and sales deductions is the contribution toward period expenses. Company commissions and bonuses are separate income; they do not increase customer product sales.
A reproducible example
A price of 1,000, unit cost of 600, other unit cost of 50 and a 5% deduction leave 300 per sale. With 5,000 in period expenses and 2,000 in other payouts, break-even needs 10 sales. A profit goal of 10,000 needs 44 sales, rounded up to whole units. These figures are fictional.
When additional sales cannot solve it
If contribution is zero or negative and other payouts are insufficient, higher volume will not cover costs. The calculator marks the goal unreachable rather than showing a negative sales count.
One period and constant assumptions
Expenses, payouts and profit goals must cover the same period. This simplified calculation assumes a single reference product and unchanged prices and costs. Use the main ledger for mixed products, dated purchases and cash flow. Profit break-even does not mean you have enough cash to purchase stock in advance.
